Amphotericin B is a polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotic produced by Streptomyces nodosus. It binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, forming pores that cause leakage of cellular components and cell death. In plant tissue culture, amphotericin B is applied to suppress fungal contamination without significant toxicity to plant tissues when used at appropriate concentrations.
